I’m in a surrealistic mood so what would be better fitting then this new wave 80’s film about invisible heroin addicted aliens at the cinefamily theater this evening … the director Slava Tsukerman will be there in Person. I’m excited !
an excerpt:
(A New Wave fashion show is to be held in a crowded Manhattan nightclub. Among the models are bisexual, cocaine addicted fashion model Margaret (Anne Carlisle), and Jimmy (also played by Carlisle). Jimmy is Margaret’s rival and nemesis and also loves cocaine, constantly hassling Margaret’s drug-dealer girlfriend Adrian (Paula E. Sheppard) for drugs despite not having any money to pay for them.
A UFO about the size of a dinner plate lands on the rooftop of the penthouse apartment occupied by Margaret and Adrian. Jimmy accompanies Margaret home before the show, but he’s actually trying to find Adrian’s drugs. Margaret meanwhile is being watched by a tiny, shapeless alien from inside the UFO. Margaret and Jimmy return to the club to participate in the show. During preparations both agree to a photographic shoot the following night on Margaret’s rooftop. They are assured that there will be plenty of cocaine available at the shoot… )

How was the year 2010 envisioned 20 yrs, 40 yrs, 60 yrs, 100 yrs 1000 years ago ? Are we living in any of those Futures now ? Futurism seems to be a pop cultural theme that had been claiming again and again a push forward, an avant garde, a progression. The Selection will be surrounding the theme of a claim for future. It can be seen as a playful experiment. Can we find the elements of future in the Past ? We will use geometric elements, play with basic principals of gender and proportion. Continue the ideas of inspiring genres like the no wave and avant garde of the 80’s, reclaim considered primitive aesthetic as essential aesthetic and perhaps leave you with the question why the past looked so much more like future ?
